Sophie Thun (1985 Frankfurt am Main, DE – Vienna, AT, and Berlin, DE) grew up in War-saw and studied graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and painting, later photography, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. It was there that she first discovered the darkroom.

For Thun, working in the “silence” and solitude of the darkroom is the most important process in producing her pictures. The darkroom transforms into a studio and the exposure wall into a canvas. While the negatives are being exposed, objects, gestures, and space—between light and wall—are recorded on the paper as photograms. However, not all movements are visible to the eye, so leaving a trace of them takes time. Ultimately, though, the artist’s every action and the space in the darkroom are fixed in the image.

Here, Thun transports both to the museum as a site-specific installation comprising eight new works.
