Maria Giovanna was born in Schio in 1991. She graduated in Painting at the Academy of fine Arts in Venice. She lives and works between Venice and Milan.
Since childhood she fought to build a better world where you can be naked and show your belly.
The experience of otherness in Maria Giovanna’s painting is conceived as the encounter with the divergence of one’s body and the Self. An ab-normal body exceeds and challenges the abstract mass of the flat and bounded body , which is frontier of the closed individuality and does not mix with the world nor with other bodies. The bellies, the excess of flesh, the tongues the fingers stuck somewhere.
The reality that takes shape, involves feelings and people, to whom the traditional imagery does not grant its right to representation: the right to love the perversity and wildness inherent in everyone.
Burly, tender and hairy men, real, sensitive and passionate lovers who declare their need to exist through the most immediate and outrageous proximity. Through scratchy brushstrokes and the softness of forms, these masses of bodies break through the barrier of conventions, and a certain instrumental rhetoric of inclusiveness, which threatens to constitute a new system of rules. The juxtaposition of the seemingly dichotomous spheres of animality and romantic love is swept away by the simple and primordial taste of touching and exploring, which allows an ‘existential nudity’ to shine through, where the nuances of the human are manifested in their titanic fragility and beauty.
