Francesca Woodman (Denver, Colorado, 1958 – New York, 1981) was an American photographer whose work developed between the mid-1970s and the early 1980s. The daughter of artists Betty and George Woodman, she spent part of her childhood between the United States and Italy, an experience that profoundly influenced her visual development. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, spending a year in Rome, where she became immersed in the city’s artistic and cultural scene. In her photographs, she explored themes such as identity, the body, memory, architecture, and the relationship between figure and space, frequently making use of self-portraits, abandoned interiors, and symbolic elements. Although her career ended prematurely with her death in 1981, her work has had a profound influence on contemporary photography and is now held in the collections of major international museums.
