Looking back on the past several decades of Bertrand Lavier’s artistic creations, this exhibition engages in a bold exploration of two of the most important creative techniques of the 20th century—the readymade and appropriation. While providing a 21st-century audience with an opportunity to understand and experience the explorations of avant-garde art in the 1980s and 90s, it also opens up an entirely new perspective through which to examine the world, to ponder the essence of art and its relationship to life through the dissolution of familiar cultural images and everyday objects, to explore a master artist’s fantastical world of fusion between creative ideas and artistic concepts. As exhibition curator Michel Gauthier puts it, Lavier is a “happy postmodernist.”
